The Ultimate Mix Tape Saga Continues

Hey fellow music lovers!  I had so much fun chatting with you guys about music that I want more of it!  I’m sharing with you some of my favorite music finds from the suggestions YOU left last blog, and asking you for MORE!  I know, I’m so greedy.  But you guys are a wealth of titillating tuneage!

If you’re just tuning in, I’m in the works of creating 2 mix cd’s for my mom for Christmas.  For the past 5 years, I’ve made her a phenomenal woman mix.  And I’m working on 2012’s now!  But I’ve found so much great music, I’m taking some of the folksier ones and making a Cafe’ Mix as well.

Many of you named artists I already knew and loved.  I thought, for those curious minds, I’d share the playlist from 2011’s Phenomenal Woman Mix!

I’m going to extend the mix tape contest through this weekend too.  I’ll be randomly picking 3 commenters between this post and the previous Mix Tape blog for a chance at one of the following,or heck, ALL OF THE ABOVE!

  • a chance to do a guest post about their guilty pleasure
  • a guest post from me on a topic TBD
  • a mix cd of tunes selected just for you!

My favorite recommendations for the Cafe’ Mix so far:

Werewolf by Fiona Apple (recommended by Eric)

An all too true poetic encounter of some relationships.  Been way too long since I listened to Fiona.

If Love is a Red Dress by Maria McKee (recommended by Dawn)

This song is great, and apparently on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack!  Quentin Tarantino marathon anyone?

My favorite recommendations for the Phenomenal Woman Mix so far:

The Only Place by Best Coast (recommended by Mark)

Is this song in a commercial?  I could swear I’d heard it before, which made it instantly catchy and awesome!

Glorious by Stephanie Mabey (power ballad recommended by Julie)

Beautiful!  Just beautiful!  And for fun, you seriously all need to check out Mabey’s tune, The Zombie Song – it’s a riot!

Next to Me by Emeli Sande’ (artist recommended by Victoria)

Victoria does a Sunday Songs post and this week she featured Emeli Sande’ covering John Lennon’s Imagine, which is also great, but I loved this original tune by her.

Beast of Burden by Bette Midler (Julie gets a second nod after I saw THIS VIDEO!)

Don’t you want to watch this video every day for the rest of your life?!

Ok folks, there’s some of the high contenders so far!  Don’t forget to comment, comment, comment below!  Please leave as many female artists/bands as possible!  Three lucky winners to be announced on monday’s blog where I also introduce a special guest music star!

  1. Some of these are covers, but I think they are all amazing:

“If You Were The Woman And I Was The Man” Cowboy Junkies

“Ballad of the Snow Leopard and the Tangueray Cowboy” by Melissa Greener

“Changed the Locks” by Lucinda Williams

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Tori Amos

    “Angel From Montgomery” Bonnie Raitt

    “Red Dirt Girl” Emmylou Harris

Fun blog post. You know I love stuff like this.

    1. Great picks! Love that cover by Tori Amos. Anything by Lucinda Williams is fun. Angel from Montgomery is one of my favorite songs. You should listen to it by Susan Tedeschi. And I know Red Dirt Girl was on my list a previous year so I’ll circle back to it. Thanks Catie! Love your tune list.

    2. I have to comment here to say that I love the Cowboy Junkies and Tori Amos’s cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit is terrific.

      1. You are the one who introduced me to that version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” I just love it.

  2. First off, you should strike Miley Cyrus from your list. I’m sorry, but pride is at stake here, Jess! Miley Cyrus??

Then again, to each their own.

    (But seriously? Miley Cyrus??).

    Anyhoo.

You want more great female artists? I’ve got plenty for you.

“I Follow Rivers” – Lykke Li
    “Acid Tongue” – Jenny Lewis
“Portions For Foxes” – Rilo Kiley (Jenny Lewis’ band)
“Hold On, Hold On” – Neko Case
“Here Comes The Summer” – Fiery Furnaces
    “Maps” – Yeah Yeah Yeahs
“The Color of Industry” – Radiation City
    “Delicate Hands” – Social Studies
    “White Elephant” – Ladytron
    “Galaxies” – Laura Veirs
    “Into Black” – Blouse
    “Viva Voce” – Rose City

    1. Sweet! More tunes! Thank you Mark.

And you just shut your mouth about my Miley tune! Her godmother is Dolly Parton, there’s a little southern charm sprinkled on her from that! And that particular song I think is beautiful. I didn’t say I owned all her movies – I DON’T. But I dig that song. So there!

  3. This is so good, Jess! I’m learning about a lot of great new artists. And … excuse me … but how did I get to be this old and not know about that Midler/Jagger video?

Now, I said it before and I’ll say it again … two words … Diana Krall.

    1. I’m gonna be perusing her tunes I promise!

And yah, isn’t that Midler/Jagger video priceless? It’s my new favorite thing!

  4. The Best Coast song is featured in a Windows 8 commercial. I took another look at my music library. I also love:

Cornflake Girl by Tori Amos: http://youtu.be/8Eiv7H9XQRY
Blue Moon (Revisited) by Cowboy Junkies: http://youtu.be/BujH7MZ-2UE
Rubberband Girl by Kate Bush: http://youtu.be/85wZw1O83aE
Mercedes Benz by Janis Joplin (or really anything by Janis Joplin): http://youtu.be/C-GFqhCq2HA
This One’s for the Girls by Martina McBride: http://youtu.be/oTowId2CWHA
Worrisome Heart by Melody Gardot: http://youtu.be/hM9JBNRDJzE

Glad you liked the others I threw out there! And I LOVE that you are doing this for your mom. 🙂

    1. Oh my goodness, I hadn’t listened to it when I left that comment, but NEXT TO ME is amazing! Headed to iTunes for a purchase…

      1. Isn’t it a great jam song! I have to get up and dance when I hear it. I also loved Emeli’s My Kind of Love.

    2. This morning I made a rash decision and put the Zombie Song on the cafe mix. Ok, ok, that’s a little more for me than my mom, but it’ll grow on her…or else! *walks with arms outstretched* grrrrrrrrr

      1. I have it on my MP3 player and have memorized all of the lyrics already. My hubby thinks I’m crazy walking around singing, “If I were a zombie, I’d never eat your brain.” You’d think he’d take that as a compliment! LOL.

        1. “Our love story, could be kinda gory…”

          Poetic genius!

  5. Anything by sinbad o’connor

    1. Clever SNL reference Sir.

  6. Thanks for the shout out! I’m glad Tina Dico was included, she’s so talented. Three more suggestions for you – Kristina Train, Jenn Bostic and Paloma Faith.

    1. I love Tina Dico! I also used her song Count to Ten on a cd. And am thinking of Let’s Get Lost for this year.

      Thanks for more recommendations Victoria!

  7. Oh, I’m so glad you like the Maria McKee song! I love that one! Here’s another one: “Put the Gun Down” by ZZWard And you know I’m continuing my list on Monday (these music posts are just too much fun and right up my alley!)

    1. OMG – how awesome is Bette!!?!?

    2. Oddly enough, I just happened across that tune on YouTube! It’s like we were channeling each other! do do do do…do do do do…

      1. Great minds think alike….

  8. […] my fabulous author friend (and DFW Writer’s Conference roomie), asked for suggestions for her Ultimate Mix Tape, I was totally in. I love sharing some of my faves with others and discovering what musical […]
