ROWmodels: The Lessons Learned From You

Hello ROWers and Readers!  It’s December 5th and this round of ROW80 is wrapping up (pun intended) this holiday season!  And I am sooo impressed with the hard work you all have done!

I think there are several of you deserving of a round of applause, so let me introduce this week’s…

ROWmodels!

Kat Morrisey had me giggling with delight at her very upbeat post about completing NaNoWriMo – I Didn’t Win the Lottery, But I Did Something Better!  That girl is a dancing fiend now that she’s finished her novel draft!  And she’s inspired me to create some new goals for myself this ROW round.  Thanks, Kat!

Nicole Nally is another NaNo winner!  She completed her novel draft and is anticipating the edit process.  I’m excited for her and the thrill of completing such a powerful word goal!  Go rock those edits and keep us posted, girl!

I hope all of you have come to know Ryan King because he has been a fabulous ROW Sponsor!  Seriously!  This guy has been leaving many comments of support and I know how much a kind comment means to me on my posts, and Ryan leaves aplenty!  Kudos to you, Sir, on your successes with writing projects and weight maintenance during the holiday season.  I am envious.

Ruth Nestvold’s post about her plights and processes as an indie author is post you CANNOT miss!  She’s got some interesting info out there about our industry, what she’s tried, what’s she trying, and shares the successes she’s achieved along the journey.  I found this post particularly interesting and really appreciated her sharing.  Thank you, Ruth!

My ROW Goals this week:

Inspired by many of you, but knowing I’m COMPLETELY strapped for time, I’m making my end goals very manageable.  I hope.

  1. Clean my desk.  Find the wood underneath it.
  2. Clean my room.  Find the carpet underneath it.  🙂
  3. Finish reading The Language of Flowers, On Writing, Football Sweetheart, and Geek Love this month.
  4. Journal at least twice a week.

A Couple Announcements:

Long overdue is the announcement of the comment/twitter winner of a free copy of Come Sunrise, reggae album by TUGG.  Thanks to all who left comments and tweeted for my musical guests !

The winner is Jenny Hansen!!!

And it’s another edition of the Holiday Yum blog fest today featuring Natalie Hartford’s French Lace Cookies!  What are you waiting for?!

The Ultimate Mix Tape Saga Continues

Hey fellow music lovers!  I had so much fun chatting with you guys about music that I want more of it!  I’m sharing with you some of my favorite music finds from the suggestions YOU left last blog, and asking you for MORE!  I know, I’m so greedy.  But you guys are a wealth of titillating tuneage!

If you’re just tuning in, I’m in the works of creating 2 mix cd’s for my mom for Christmas.  For the past 5 years, I’ve made her a phenomenal woman mix.  And I’m working on 2012’s now!  But I’ve found so much great music, I’m taking some of the folksier ones and making a Cafe’ Mix as well.

Many of you named artists I already knew and loved.  I thought, for those curious minds, I’d share the playlist from 2011’s Phenomenal Woman Mix!

Phenomenal Woman Mix 2011

  1. Lights by Ellie Goulding
  2. Cosmic Love by Florence + the Machine
  3. With or Without You by Sarah Darling

  18. Sing You Home by Xenia
  19. Tightrope by Janelle Monae
  20. Here I Go Again by Audra Mae

I’m going to extend the mix tape contest through this weekend too.  I’ll be randomly picking 3 commenters between this post and the previous Mix Tape blog for a chance at one of the following,or heck, ALL OF THE ABOVE!

  • a chance to do a guest post about their guilty pleasure
  • a guest post from me on a topic TBD
  • a mix cd of tunes selected just for you!

My favorite recommendations for the Cafe’ Mix so far:

Werewolf by Fiona Apple (recommended by Eric)

An all too true poetic encounter of some relationships.  Been way too long since I listened to Fiona.

If Love is a Red Dress by Maria McKee (recommended by Dawn)

This song is great, and apparently on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack!  Quentin Tarantino marathon anyone?

My favorite recommendations for the Phenomenal Woman Mix so far:

The Only Place by Best Coast (recommended by Mark)

Is this song in a commercial?  I could swear I’d heard it before, which made it instantly catchy and awesome!

Glorious by Stephanie Mabey (power ballad recommended by Julie)

Beautiful!  Just beautiful!  And for fun, you seriously all need to check out Mabey’s tune, The Zombie Song – it’s a riot!

Next to Me by Emeli Sande’ (artist recommended by Victoria)

Victoria does a Sunday Songs post and this week she featured Emeli Sande’ covering John Lennon’s Imagine, which is also great, but I loved this original tune by her.

Beast of Burden by Bette Midler (Julie gets a second nod after I saw THIS VIDEO!)

Don’t you want to watch this video every day for the rest of your life?!

Ok folks, there’s some of the high contenders so far!  Don’t forget to comment, comment, comment below!  Please leave as many female artists/bands as possible!  Three lucky winners to be announced on monday’s blog where I also introduce a special guest music star!

Happy Halloween! Meet this week’s ROWmodels!

Hello fellow ROWers and Writers!

I’ve got some exciting ROWmodels to showcase this week!

Kicking things up Charleston-style, is the lovely and talented Julie Glover who shares with us The Roaring Twenties and #ROW80.  There’s a fabulous photo of Julie and her hubby getting ready for a 20’s themed party, which is my favorite period of history.  And she shared with us some awesome hit films and books of the 20’s!  But the reason Julie is truly awesome, and a ROWmodel this week, is her stellar dedication to her goals and follow through!  Julie has been working on her novel, blogging consistently, even did some plotting work on a new project, and has been working out zumba style!  Way to go, Julie!  You’re my idol!

Also on this week’s ROWmodels Hall of Fame is Jeff Clough with There’s No Such Thing as Free Time.  Jeff tells it like it is when it comes to the many hats a writer has to wear nowadays to be successful.  There’s the actual writing cap, but what about all the work you do researching, editing, marketing, coding, designing, etc.  We’re busy people!  While he wasn’t working on as much writing this week, he made some headway on his reading goals and will have some web changes to look forward to so keep your eyes peeled!

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair…

Happy Halloween Everyone!

I hope we’re all getting to celebrate by dressing up, trick or treating, or handing out candy today!  I’ll be in costume at work most of the day, but plan on watching scary movies all night tonight!

What’s your favorite scary movie?

In Honor of Halloween, Marcia Richards and I are announcing the winners of the Halloween Contest today!

Have a very happy Halloween Everyone!

Have you entered the Halloween photo contest yet?

Fall is my favorite time of year because it contains my three favorite holidays!  Christmas, of course, is a time for gift giving and family get togethers.  You may think I’m crazy, but I love wrapping presents!  And Thanksgiving is very special to me as my family is related to two of the pilgrims that crossed over on the Mayflower.  But Halloween is where it starts and this past weekend many of you may have held parties, attended parties, perhaps even entered a costume contest!

I’m here to remind you it’s not too late to enter Marcia Richards and my Halloween contest for The RedhotsTwo redheads.  Two opinions.  Always keeping it interesting.

Recently, we interviewed Young Adult Paranormal writer, Fabio Bueno, about his new release, Wicked Sense.  Fabio has graciously offered to giveaway not just one, but six copies of his book to six lucky winners who submit their favorite Halloween photos!

The Redhots and Fabio Bueno: A Wicked(ly) Sens(ible) Review

Admit it!  You were all holding your breath in anticipation of who our mystery writer was going to be for this edition of…

The Redhots!

Marcia Richards and I are back together for more Halloween fun, and we invited debut author Fabio Bueno to join us this month as our first ever Indie Author Interview!

You know the saying “Double, double, toil and trouble…”?  Well, I thought there’s two of us redheads, so let the cauldron bubble by serving you up TWO interviews with our YA paranormal fantasy writer.

Meet Fabio!

Author of Young Adult novels, family man, gamer, “runner,” geek, kindle hugger, coffeeholic, SCBWIer, x-men hopeful, district 3 tribute, hufflepuff, daydreamer.

He’s recently written a book.  A book called Wicked Sense, which just so happened to win 1st place in the YA category of the Sandy Literary Contest!  Here’s the Goodread’s blurb:

Wicked Sense –

Witches inhabit our world, organized in covens and hiding behind a shroud of secrecy—the Veil.

Skye’s London coven sends her to Seattle’s Greenwood High to find the Singularity, an unusually gifted witch who may break the Veil and trigger a dangerous new era of witch-hunting. Things get complicated when Skye meets a charming new classmate, Drake. Skye’s job becomes even trickier when she clashes with Jane, an intimidating rival witch.

Drake falls for the mysterious Skye, but odd accidents, potion mix-ups, and the occasional brush with death kind of get in the way of romance. Once he discovers Skye is a witch, he goes to war for her, even though his only weapons are a nice set of abs and a sharp sense of humor.

Fighting off wicked Jane and the other dark forces hell-bent on seizing the Singularity’s immense power, Skye and Drake will risk everything to save the covens.

Going on a date has never been harder.

*****

I promised double the fun, and Fabio…he really didn’t stand a chance against Marcia and I!  He agreed to be interviewed by BOTH of us!  So the first half is here, and it continues over at Marcia’s place!

*****

1. The main character in Wicked Sense is a witch with the gift of True Sight. Do you believe in the paranormal – ghosts, spirits, auras, mediums?

I believe in some of it. Spirits, auras, and mediums seem plausible. I want to believe that people (and animals) have a certain connection with one another and with nature. A line in Wicked Sense paraphrases one of Arthur C. Clarke laws: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Similarly, maybe some aspects of what we call “paranormal” are actually biochemical and physical properties we don’t understand yet. I expect that someday scientists will find evidence of the paranormal.

2. I loved the inner monologues of teens, Drake and Skye. How was it writing both a male’s and female’s perceptions of High School? And dating?

I loved it! It was like writing two books at once. I could play with how they perceive events and interpret things differently. I wanted to show a little bit of male thinking too, which is not explored in Paranormal Romances very often. This setup allowed me to inject some humor, uncertainty, and angst—all integral parts of high-school life and the dating scene 🙂

3. Were you always a reader/writer? What was your favorite book as a teen?

YA wasn’t as prevalent when I was a teen (I’m not that young), so I usually read adult fiction. I had an eclectic taste, reading Isaac Asimov, Agatha Christie, Mark Twain, and Jules Verne. Books that made a mark on me as a teen include “Rebecca,” “Catch-22,” “The Little Prince,” “Stranger in a Strange Land,” and “Robinson Crusoe.” And I used to read a lot of mythology and “history of inventions” books.

4. You’re a regular face on social media, getting to know and support other writers. What has the writing community meant to you?

Writing a book is exhilarating, and publishing it is very rewarding. But connecting with so many wonderful people, online and in person, is the best part. I am usually a shy person, but I feel completely at ease with my writer friends. And the support, wow. Writers are genuinely invested the happiness of one another. We hurt when a writer friend faces a setback, and we rejoice when a colleague breaks through. We share and try to help with each other. I’ve learned so much, and I hope I’ve been giving back too. I’ve worked in the academia and in the corporate world, and the difference between them and the writing community is striking.

5. In your bio, you describe yourself as a District 3 Tribute, a Hufflepuff, an X-Men hopeful! I love it! What’s your favorite pop culture craze right now?

I get news and trends online. Among my favorites are the hilarious George Takei Facebook page and the tweet #hashtag chains where everybody contributes a funny tweet to a very specific topic, like #pickuplinesforwriters, #IYKWIM, #replacesongtitlewithcake and so on. I waste a lot of time on Tumblr (meme central) and Pinterest. I’ve been visiting YouTube more than I should too. The clips from the record-breaking skydiver who jumped off a balloon fascinate me (one is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkIiPtj7Awo ). And I must confess that I’ve been watching parodies of Psy’s “Gangnam Style”(oh, the shame). Check out this dancing robot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmeJvkN4ntI

6. And in the spirit of Halloween, what’s your favorite memory of this holiday? And share your best costume!

Now that I have kids, my best memories are from when I took them to their first trick-or-treating, of course!

I don’t always wear a costume, but a couple of years ago, I decided to go as (geek alert!) … Rorscharch from Watchmen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rorschach_(comics)) . How did I fare? See for yourself: here’s the original action figure, and the costumed me. I didn’t have a leather trench coat, though…

Rorschach, the action figure…

Rorschach, the Fabio!

Thanks, Fabio!  I love the costume!  And Readers, you can get more Wicked Sense and more Fabio at Marcia’s blog:  Wicked Sense is Wickedly Bueno!

You can also find more Fabio here:

The Redhots.  Two Redheads.  Two Opinions.  Keeping it sizzling HOT!

What I Learned from Zombies and Tapas…

Hey there, ROWers!  Another week by and some of you are gearing up for NaNoWriMo with a vengeance!  Others are creating and maintaining meal plans.  And there are some of us (raises hand) who are just trying to get by each day to the best of our abilities.  Well, fear not!  There’s always great work being done in our learning moments.  I for one, had been whining that I haven’t written anything recently on my WIP, but you know what, the time away from it made me realize where I could strengthen the plot and change some characterization in places.  It was good to go away for a little bit.  It’s made me miss my work, dearly, but now when I have free time I’m really excited to visit it again!

What I am excited for completing this week has been in reading.  I finished reading Shine Shine Shine by Lydia Netzer and will be helping run the Great New Books final discussion on this title today!  Stop over and participate!  The more the merrier!

This book is unlike anything I’ve encountered.  It’s a love story set in the language of space.  A perfect housewife with a hidden identity, a man with Asperger’s who only knows how to communicate with robots.  Together, this couple will defy the odds and demonstrate a very real, albeit unique, kind of lasting love.

There was also some great ROW updates this week and I’m sharing my two favorites!

ROW(Models)

First up is Christina Olson who participated in the Run For Your Lives 5K race in California.  The race, for those that may be unfamiliar, is your typical obstacle course run with walls to climb, puddles to cross, hills to speed down – although you’re doing this while zombies are trying to attack you!  Isn’t that brilliant?  I love it!  Christina participated as a zombie this year and takes us through the make up process of her zombification.  (complete with pictures!)  She may not have gotten all her writing done, but it sure sounds like Christina gave herself a little play time that recharged her, supported others, and made her confident to tackle her goals for the next week!  Sometimes we need that!  Way to go, Christina!  Loved your zombie post!

Next up is Tia Bach from Depression Cookies, a fabulous mother/daughter blog.  After a dinner out for tapas with her husband, Tia took her dinner home and made it a writing plan!  With the notion of writing small chunks of plot plans and character sketches, this pantser writer started…*gasp* outlining!  And because she’s my idol organized, she also packed a NaNo bag!  Curious?  You’ll have to head to her post to see what’s in it!  But this girl is motivated and moving forward!  Way to go, Tia!  You didn’t even need zombies chasing you to get your write goal in!  😉

Plus, I’m a total fan of tapas!  Check out my rumchata tapioca parfait I enjoyed last weekend!

How did your week go?  What were your learning lessons?

And don’t forget!

This friday, Marcia and I are interviewing our first author for The Redhots!  His book has been getting lots of 5 star reviews!  Tune in on October 26th to see who it is!

It’s Guilty Pleasure Friday again and what’s more pleasurable than hounding down and objectifying author CJ West?

CJ is a suspense author.  A hardcore one.  I mean, the URL for his blog is CJWestKills.  See?  Hardcore!

As equally hardcore as CJ is Jillian Dodd.  Jillian fights crime with fireworks because she blogs and writes about LOVE!  Recently, the two authors happened to hobnob with other writerly folks, and Jillian asked if CJ wouldn’t mind being featured on her blog Glitter, Bliss, and Perfect Chaos for one of her epic MANday posts!

Prepare yourself, Readers, for the most provincial contest our our time!

How can you say no to that??!

So what is MANday might you ask?  It’s really better if I SHOW you.  Feast your eyes on Samoan Rugby Players and Their Tattoos or if you prefer more clean cut, try MANday’s Magic Mike, a blog all about the upcoming movie premier for a story about male erotic dancers!

Where did you all go?  Get BACK here!  And put your pants back on!

So here’s what you need to know about the contest:

If we can get 5,000 people to comment on CJ’s website before the end of June, he agreed to be featured in MANday!

If you help us, YOU will be eligible to win a prize package of ebooks by both CJ West and Jillian Dodd, as well as some other excellent writer’s books. You can enter to win that package by doing this:

Tweet this:  Help @jilliandodd convince @cjwest to be on MANday http://wp.me/p1zk5w-A7 #teamnoshirt #contest #prize #kindle #books

If we reach the goal, CJ and Jillian will also award a $500 Amazon Gift card to one lucky winner!!!

To enter, go to CJ’s blog and leave a comment.

List of e-books in prize package:

That Boy  by Jillian Dodd
That Wedding by Jillian Dodd
The End of Marking Time by CJ West
Sin And Vengeance by CJ West
Drawing Free by Elena Aitken
Devil Unknown a novella by Steena Holmes
Elemental Magic by Angela Wallace
Again by Diana Murdock
Telesa by Lani Wendt Young
Exiled by MR Merrick
The Bridge Club by Patricia Sands

Doesn’t this contest sound amazing?  I’m so excited!  Be sure to leave your comment for CJ before July 1st!

And guess what?  It’s a double dose of me today cause I’m also blogging over at the Life List Club’s new blogsite!  Haven’t checked it out yet?  Get on over there!  I’m talking about your 20’s!  You know, the supposedly defining decade of our lives?!  I’d love to hear your thoughts and introduce you to some of my favorite peeps.  You can also find us mixing martinis or coming up with costume party ideas at #LifeListClub.  See you all there!
