I Might Need An Intervention: When Brand Loyalty Becomes a Problem
Hey Friends!Ā I’m beyond thrilled to welcome my special guilty pleasures guest today for her debut on the Happiness Project!Ā Please give a warm welcome to Renee Schuls-Jacobson and her guilty obsession with HAIR!Ā
*****
Since the 8th grade, I have had a love-hate relationship with my hair.Ā I love being able to hop out of the shower and just towel off and go, but I never feel I really look polished enough when it counts.
Over the years, I have stretched and pulled, given myself deep conditioning treatments and slept in bandanas: each curl pressed flat and curing overnight in V-05 in an attempt to give myself straight, swingy hair: the kind of hair I always saw girls toss across their shoulders and catch in one hand before they laid down on their towels in their bikinis. I wanted Farah Fawcettās hair. Or the hair from the āGee, Your Hair Smells Terrificā commercials.
Instead, I got long, curly hair that morphed into a frizzy pyramid if combed or touched. The rules were clear. Never touch my hair once it dried.
Iāve posted pictures of myself on my blog.
Usually, I am wearing a hat.
But occasionally I have shared other photos. Confession: these pix were usually taken immediately after I saw Michael, my hair guy. Because Michael knows how to make my hair behave. But I can only afford to look like a glamour-girl once every nine weeks.
The rest of the time, Iām on my own.
Many years ago I fell in love with a hair care product. You know the good ones? The ones that are on the top shelf? Or at eye-level? Yeah. Well, now drop your eyes about two shelves down.
Now go lower.
My senior year in high school, I discovered paradise in an aerosol can. In 1985, a magical white foam gave my hair manageability. After just two {maybe three} dollops, my hair was perfect. And by perfect, I mean it did not move. Sometimes my hair was crunchy. I didnāt care. It never frizzed again.
A few months back, I noticed my mousse had been out of stock for a while.
Eventually, I got jittery and decided to inquire.
āI donāt think weāre getting that brand anymore,ā replied a heavy-set woman at the front desk, her hair knitted into tight braids.
Hurrying home, I parked myself in front of the computer, prepared to conduct my own Internet search.
By then, I was getting low on my stuff.
I found my junk mousse at drugstore.com marked with a red asterisk.
I scrolled down to figure out what that bit of red meant.
Ohmyholyno.
I didnāt think it could happen again. They did this to me in the 1970s with āPink Lilac in Loveā fingernail polish. It was the best color in the whole world. Donāt even try to Google it. It wonāt come up. It isnāt even on Wikipedia. But I remember when my favorite color disappeared. You know what happened? I stopped wearing nail polish.
Years later, Gabriel Cosmetics discontinued their ZuZu Luxe lipstick in Uber. You guys, I bought the last 10 tubes; thatās how much I loved that stuff. I rationed carefully so as to make sure I had one tube left to use for my sonās bar mitzvah back in June of 2012. I have long since finished that tube and continue to search for the right lip color. I havenāt found it. Not yet.
But we are talking about hair now. How could they discontinue my mousse? I actually made an appeal to the makers of Condition 3-in-1 Maximum Hold Mousse. I begged them. Please, Iāve been using it for 30 years.
Please, donāt screw with my mousse.
I was instructed to purchase as many cans as I could afford.
I ordered 20 cans. And then I ordered 20 more. When my friend came up to visit from Florida, she brought me another 10 cans. Can you imagine? She checked a bag filled with mousse for me, you guys. Because she has a curly-haired daughter, and she understood my plight. She knows I have tried eleventy-three skillion other brands and that nothing else works.
So it’s official: this former clutter consultant is now a hoarder.
I plan to hold onto my remaining bottles of mousse for as long as possible because I have yet to find an alternative.
And hereās the worst thing. I kill about two cans of this stuff a month. Thatās 24 cans a year. Iāve got two years’ worth of product stashed here.
Unless the chemicals inside break down, which Iām told, they might.
Itās looking grim, people.
Eventually, the jig is going to be up.
And then where will I be?
Why do manufacturers do this to us? Make us fall in love with their products and then discontinue them?
What items have you loved and lost? And seriously, if any of you curly-girlies out there have suggestions about what to do about my impending frizz, please let me know.

Happy Halloween! Meet this week’s ROWmodels!
Hello fellow ROWers and Writers!
I’ve got some exciting ROWmodels to showcase this week!Ā
Kicking things up Charleston-style, is the lovely and talented Julie Glover who shares with us The Roaring Twenties and #ROW80.Ā There’s a fabulous photo of Julie and her hubby getting ready for a 20’s themed party, which is my favorite period of history.Ā And she shared with us some awesome hit films and books of the 20’s!Ā But the reason Julie is truly awesome, and a ROWmodel this week, is her stellar dedication to her goals and follow through!Ā Julie has been working on her novel, blogging consistently, even did some plotting work on a new project, and has been working out zumba style!Ā Way to go, Julie!Ā You’re my idol!
Also on this week’s ROWmodels Hall of Fame is Jeff Clough with There’s No Such Thing as Free Time.Ā Jeff tells it like it is when it comes to the many hats a writer has to wear nowadays to be successful.Ā There’s the actual writing cap, but what about all the work you do researching, editing, marketing, coding, designing, etc.Ā We’re busy people!Ā While he wasn’t working on as much writing this week, he made some headway on his reading goals and will have some web changes to look forward to so keep your eyes peeled!
Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair…
Happy Halloween Everyone!Ā
I hope we’re all getting to celebrate by dressing up, trick or treating, or handing out candy today!Ā I’ll be in costume at work most of the day, but plan on watching scary movies all night tonight!

Blog Awards and Life List News
Get ready for a fly-by week on The Happiness Project!Ā Today I want to say thank you to the writers who bestowed me with some great blogging awards and tell you about this Friday’s upcoming Milestone Party!
First, a big BIG thank you to Amanda Rudd and Gene Lempp who both nominated me for a Versatile Blog Award.Ā Amanda and Gene are such awesome writers, readers, and friends that I am very honored to share this award with them.Ā Amanda is, like me, an example of persistence, and a very encouraging and charming woman.Ā Gene is irritatingly smart about how to set goals and I credit him for getting my nose to the grindstone.
Thank you immensely to all my readers, I wouldn’t be doing this without you!Ā Well, I might, but it wouldn’t be nearly as fun or filled with potential learning opportunities.Ā I’m so humbled to share my day with you and get to know so many of you through your writing, your projects, and of course YOUR COMMENTS-my fave!
Ā Ā Ā Ā Another BIG thank you to Marcia Richards for naming me a recipient of the Liebster Blog Award.Ā Liebster is a german word for Friend, and coming from my Life List Club co-founder, I can definitely say Marcia is a great friend.Ā She’s got the creativity and energy of a toddler chewing espresso beans and at the same time comes off as the wise fairy godmother of all things chocolate and life lessons.Ā Marcia, thank you for being my sound board.Ā I love bouncing ideas around with you!
Part of receiving such honorary awards is presenting them to others you feel deserve them.Ā The Versatile Blogger Award is for bloggers that are able to write about a broad range of topics with talent and enthusiasm.Ā I must recognize the writing works of Catie Rhodes, who is a woman after my own heart with her posts that range from the paranormal to films from the 80’s-90’s.Ā For starting her own blog not too long ago, Catie has it figured out!
I also award the Versatile Blogger Award to Ellie Ann Soderstrom, another new blogger who regales her readers with fascinating tales of mythological creatures and fairtytales as well as stories about why her husband is so annoying.Ā And if you comment, she may make up a story for you with the character name of your choice.Ā Ellie Ann is pure fun!
The Liebster Award is for bloggers I consider a true friend.Ā There are two people that stick out in my mind who have come to my writer’s rescue and shared their own stories with the world which I always think is a brave and self-aware act.Ā I present this award to Mark Petruska and Renee Schuls-Jacobson.
Mark is my guy, he keeps me in the know on what’s happening in Portland, Oregon, a city I visited 2 years ago and fell in love with.Ā Lately, Mark’s been on some trips of his own and really grown in the past year.Ā He recently fell in love!Ā *communal Awwww*Ā And with this year of change, Mark’s been sharing more about his life with us, and I couldn’t be happier for all he’s accomplished, including his decision to self-publish!
Renee wrote a post called When Writers Meltdown where she was so honest about how we all judge ourselves and think we’re never doing enough.Ā I was SO in that moment then, and Renee not only reached out to me via comments, but did so with e-mail and twitter too.Ā She wanted me to know I was not alone, and that she knew exactly how I felt.Ā What better definition of friend is there than that?
There’s more fun to be had this Friday with the Life List Club‘s Milestone Party!Ā Be sure to come back and comment this weekend while each of us shares an update of our goals and YOU can win a shot at several LLC giveaways!Ā Share your own successes and learning moments with us.Ā We’ll all be offering goodies to win and cyber treats and playing our kind of party music.Ā I’m thinking…CeCe Peniston.Ā You?
Monday Morning Mash-Up
It’s monday morning and I hope you all get a chance to settle into your favorite chair and sip your coffee/tea of choice.Ā My morning is starting with a banana bar my dad made!Ā Mmmm.Ā I’ve been trying to get to more blogs this week and see what everyone’s been up to.Ā Here’s my favorite reads from the past week, take your time and enjoy these great writers!Ā Happy monday!
Writers and Readers:
Pam Hawley blogged about writing letters to herself to overcome writer’s block in this past week’s Life List Club guest post.Ā She shows blankness who’s boss with humor and inspiration.
Marcia Richards interviews Jody Hedlund about her new book The Doctor’s Lady and what historical character from the Oregon Trail inspired her to write this book!
Renee Schuls-Jacobson blogs about learning from mistakes in The Day I Got It All Wrong.Ā Go on, laugh WITH her, and share your own learning opportunities if you feel comfortable.Ā Gotta tell you, Renee rocks!Ā You’ll be in a safe space!Ā As long as she’s not throwing things.
Sara Grambusch blogs about How to Pay (almost) Nothing for Books.Ā Her energy and enthusiasm for the reading process and writer connections will draw you in!
A MUST-READ for writers, Kristen Lamb blogs the 7 Deadly Sins of Writing.Ā She graciously shares her own learning experience and tips to beat these writing dead ends.Ā
Paranormal/Mythology:
Gene Lempp’s creature features are superb in his Designing from Bones series.Ā His post on Zoo Arcane: Pterodactyl, Luck Owl, Elder Phoenix was really fascinating to read and imagine encountering these animals.
Catie Rhodes dug up some fascinating spooky history in Ouija Board: Toy or Tool?Ā Read at your own risk!Ā
PureĀ Fun:
Piper Bayard and her partner Holmes take on your Labors of Love.Ā Do you have a question for Dr. Piper and Dr. Holmes?Ā Join in the fun as they solve all love’s conundrums, from True Blood love triangles to using nookie to entice your hubby to talk to you!Ā It’s rollicking Cupid-filled fun!
A fun new blogger I’ve met, Little Miss Vix, asks readers who their favorite Disney character is, and shares with us why she LOVES Beauty and Beast.Ā
Katie Ganshert shares her real life romance story with us, and asks you to share your own.Ā What kind of couple are you?Ā If you’re still looking, who do you imagine you’ll be?
Did I miss anything?Ā Share your favorite post links in the comments below and I promise to check them out!Ā I may even share my banana bar with you.Ā š
